I've had the unexpected pleasure of getting to know Beverly Bass a little more throughout the past week. This video submission being due on September 11 is purely coincidence, I'm sure, however, it's a reminder that any date is often just another day to one person or another. If we're lucky, we wake up, we get dressed, we get on the bus, train, or plane. We walk by each other, focusing on our own goals, needs & relationships. It's usually not until an epic event brings everyone to a hault that we reconsider what life really means or attempt to put ourselves in the shoes of others.

September 11 has stood out to me for a long time - even before 2001. September 11th is the day my father died out of nowhere in 1993. Just another day. Just like tomorrow will be & the next days.

32 years w/o dad. 8 months w/o mom.
So many days.

Today, on September 11, 2025, I live in New York City. I worked from home. I heard bagpipes play from the firehouse next door. I filmed a monologue. I submitted this self-tape. I rode the subway surrounded by commuters. I must have walked by thousands of people within a matter of minutes, all doing their day to day things in the city. I rehearsed & sang music with friends. I talked on the phone with the love of my life. I watched TV. I texted. I stayed up late writing this. All things we take for granted. Just another day. Until the day 'means' something.

I'm thankful I got to make music & be an artist today. I got to put myself in the shoes of someone whose day was just another day until it wasn't. Someone I never would have gotten to know if an insane event hadn't happened. If a song wasn't written. If a role wasn't created. If casting hadn't given a person like me the opportunity to put myself in her shoes. And now I know her a little more. And a little more about me.

1986 was the year my parents brought me into the world. And now I'm here to represent them. To learn more about people & the days which impact them the most. I love that about being an actor. I love trying to understand what makes us all tick: one day at a time.

📽🎶 PRO TIP: Start your video cuts with songs YOU ALREADY KNOW. Build from there. Over time, you’ll create a music arsenal and have a better idea of where the blind spots are so you can fill in the gaps with new songs + showcase even more sides of your personality + talent + skills!

🗝 Don’t be afraid to change the key to suit your voice. Try playing with style + perspective + dynamics + lyrics + phrasing. Same song, different takes = totally different vibes. PLAY. You never know when it’ll come in handy.

HAPPY HEAVENLY BIRTHDAY AUNTIE!

Yesterday would have been Auntie Bettina's birthday. I don't talk about her nearly enough. So much time passes as you try to get through the days, months, years of grief... working to live in the moment, plan your own life & future, chase your dreams...

Auntie was my third parent. I was lucky to have a mother & a father & an AUNTIE. She was always there for my mom ever since they met in New York City in the 70s. Her best friend. Her maid of honor. My second mother. My second father after my dad died when I was 7.

She would've been 76 yesterday. My mom would have been 76 tomorrow. Best friends with birthdays just 2 days apart: Auntie on July 8, 1949 & Mom on July 10, 1949. (Mom always loved to remind Auntie that she was the younger one.) Their friendship has influenced me with the importance of loyalty, love, patience, commitment, honesty, & selflessness. They taught me the kind of friend I need & want to be. I'm so grateful to have had that example of two friends who would have done anything for each other.

In fact, when Auntie got in her car accident the day before Thanksgiving in 2003, my mom wasn't initially allowed in the hospital as her next of kin because we weren't blood related. So Mom and Auntie told them they were life partners so we would be allowed to be in the room by her side. That month was the craziest. Auntie went through surgeries to try to address internal injuries from the accident, and just as it seemed like she would be on the mend, 5 days before Christmas, she went into a coma. With me by her side, my mom had to make the most gutwrenchingly difficult decision to take Bettina off of life support...her quality of life kept declining rapidly & just wouldn't improve.

My mom lived 75 years; 75 very full years.
But 32 years were without the love of her life Enrique Valdes.
22 years were without her best friend Bettina Larrow.
38 years w/me managing grief for herself & a child.

I'm lucky I got to have my mom by my side as long as I did. We were a team. But now I feel energetic peace knowing Mom, Dad, & Auntie are reunited, celebrating together after all these years. Happy Birthday to them.🎈

But I carried my mom with me in every costume change, every swirl of a pie, and every laugh and tear throughout this process.

THANK YOU to everyone who came (or tried to get tickets) to our sold-out run! You are a big part of what keeps me going when the going gets tough.

The love, kindness, and support of friends and family who made the trek out to Ridgefield to visit our pie diner gave me the strength to keep showing up every day—especially on the toughest days. Knowing you were showing up for me helped me remember: THE SHOW MUST GO ON.

Keep showing up for yourself and your loved ones, my friends. 🫶

Channeling both my dad and mom with this epic wig designed by @wigician and maintained to perfection by @iam.amandajayne!

When finding my version of Nurse Norma in Waitress, I wanted to make sure my mixed ethnicity wasn’t erased in the hairstyle I wore. I brought this up to our wig and make-up designer Carissa, who welcomed my ideas with open arms—and I was thrilled when this look came to life.

This hairstyle is so far outside my norm...a, but it felt so right for this no-nonsense nurse! I love that it reflects my dad’s hair color and texture and gives a nod to my mom’s signature short-hair.

Hair texture and representation have always mattered to me—and as we head into our final week, I’m proud to wear a wig that honors both my Cuban and Midwest roots. (Pun intended.)

I forced myself to go to the AEA building for an ECC audition. It took everything in me to get ready and leave the house that morning. I responded to this photo from my mom as I got ready.

1/21/25:
Two days prior, we spoke on the phone for the last time. We checked in about how we were doing, both proud of the steps we'd taken in organizing our households. I got annoyed that I was trying to explain what was happening in my world and that she somehow made it about herself even though she was just trying to sweetly relate with me. This past year, I'd been sensitive about accepting the likelihood that she would be staying in AZ longer than I anticipated. An inconceivable roadblock prevented her from having the means to move, so I spent 2024 trying to sort through and make sense of it, hoping to find a solution.

We talked about the storage unit she still had in Hartford (still filled with her previous Cali household) since I wondered about a couch I might want. She suggested a way to downsize the unit, but I snapped at her in frustration - that storage unit symbolized the hope for her to finally move back East. I told her not to worry about it since it's MY problem to deal with all of HER stuff since she won't need it now. I apologized for getting snippy - we chatted a bit more before she went back to working on the fence she was putting up around her yard. She mentioned it was colder at night...in the 50s, which for Ehrenberg is practically freezing compared to the 90s-120s they experience throughout the year.

I called the next afternoon. I had an amazing audition I couldn't wait to tell her about. She didn't pick up. I assumed it was because she was busy working in the yard or the service was terrible per usual. I went to the movies to celebrate since she didn't answer.

1/23/25:
Our last texts - a cropped picture of mom from a fuller photo with her brother. Turns out she ordered a print on 1/22 that I later found while going through her mail. Uncle Steve had been ill for a while - we were bracing for the call any day. 🕊 1/29

But nothing braced me for the call I got first.

I've been reflecting on my second solo cabaret ever and I'm really proud of the work I did to put this show together. I'm SO grateful to have had such a fantastic collaborative pianist in Tony Bellomy who accompanied me for the evening in -- "Maternal Instincts" -- what I affectionately am calling my show, which allowed me to begin revisiting some of the maternal figures I've played and have been influenced by growing up and throughout my career, along with the influence these types of roles, my own mother and becoming an arts educator have had on me as a creative, mentor, and individual.

I'm especially honored to have been invited to be the featured guest vocalist of the evening by Haig Shahverdian and my long time friend and mentor Marc Kaplan and to have a space to reflect on the impacts that the West Hartford and Connecticut arts scene have had on my journey towards becoming an artist.

I had the pleasure of vocal coaching and creating vocal arrangements with 4 incredibly talented vocalists as they prepared to present their acts in the finals of HARTFORD'S GOT TALENT Season Two @thebushnell!

David Lally, Sebastian Gates-Graceson, Samantha Acosta, and Dioney Gonzalez absolutely rocked their performances and truly delivered steller renditions of their songs while sharing who they are as artists. Seriously so proud of their dedication, vulnerability, and passion.

It was also exciting to see @sebastianggraceson be recognized as the 2nd place winner by the judges! A proud voice teacher moment for me as Sebastian has studied privately with me through the Ensign-Darling New Voices since fall of 2021.

It truly takes a village to put on a talent show production of this magnitude and the Connecticut community is really lucky to get this type of opportunity to showcase and uplift the many talents and voices of the Greater Hartford area! Congratulations to ALL TEN of the incredible acts who shared their talents! And congratulations and THANK YOU to @creatorjoeyoung, @iamkevinramsey, and the entire @hartfordsgottalentshow team for a successful Season Two!

In this clip, I sing a song called "Happy Endings" from Aasta Frascati-Robinson's first draft of their musical While I'm Still Young alongside @kylevasquez, @imanithecowboy, and @gloalcala. Special thanks to our MD @rachmakesmusic and director @eraboylan for their guidance along this very quick 5 day process! And shout out to the creatives, designers and crew who made these readings really look top notch in such a short amount of time.
